Bot request[redaktar]

First, excuse me for my poor English. I like to run a bot in this Wiktionary periodically, to check interwiki links. I may do it? Please, if I don't get permission to run bot in this Wiktionary, please accept my warnfile to update these articles with another bot.

Operator: pt:User:555 (w:pt:User:555)
Bot user: User:Zumg (pt:Special/Contributions/Zumg)

Reply here, please. I only send my request to meta after (and if) local approval. Tanks. 555 21:25, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Hola amiko! – Excuse me for my poor English, too. I prefer Ido in international relations. Since I am here the only sysop, I maybe have the right to make a decision. Of course you may help this Wiktionary to be connected with other Wiktionaries. I presume that you are responsible and know what you are going to do. – With regards Artomo 09:37, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Kelka sugesti[redaktar]

-LaKaoso

Hola LaKaoso! O ka vu pensas ke vortoformo kom "Albana, Armena, Baska, Bosna, Bulgara, Estona, Finlanda, Korea, Indoneza, Latva, Lituana, Luxemburga, Persa, Portugala, Slovaka, Slovena, Swahila, Vietnama" esus posibla en Ido? P.S. Divenez vortaristo e kreez konto por vu. Omna helpo esas bezonata. – Sama.

Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki[redaktar]

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the English language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. Infact, of the 1798 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 48 messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages of almost 80 extensions, with about 1050 messages.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator priviledges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on meta and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.

You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we would be happy to help you get started.

Thank you very much for your attention and I do hope to see some of you on Betawiki soon! Cheers! Siebrand@Betawiki 15:20, 7 di oktobro 2007 (UTC)

Namespaces[redaktar]

En angliana por omni (developer-i) komprenar

Dear Wiktionarians,

We already surfaced this discussion at Wikipedia, but I bring it here now. I propose changing the namespaces names in Wiktionary according to this list:

	NS_MEDIA            => 'Media',
	NS_SPECIAL          => 'Specala',
	NS_MAIN             => '',
	NS_TALK             => 'Diskuto',
	NS_USER             => 'Uzanto',
	NS_USER_TALK        => 'Uzanto_Diskuto',
	NS_PROJECT          => 'Wikivortaro'
	NS_PROJECT_TALK     => 'Wikivortaro_Diskuto',
	NS_IMAGE            => 'Imajo',
	NS_IMAGE_TALK       => 'Imajo_Diskuto',
	NS_MEDIAWIKI        => 'MediaWiki',
	NS_MEDIAWIKI_TALK   => 'MediaWiki_Diskuto',
	NS_TEMPLATE         => 'Shablono',
	NS_TEMPLATE_TALK    => 'Shablono_Diskuto',
	NS_HELP             => 'Helpo',
	NS_HELP_TALK        => 'Helpo_Diskuto',
	NS_CATEGORY         => 'Kategorio',
	NS_CATEGORY_TALK    => 'Kategorio_Diskuto'

The project name should become Wikivortaro. The NS_MAIN namespace is to be kept empty (like in all Wikipedias and Wiktionaries). I already checked for possible name conflicts between old and new namespaces and found none (in Wikipedia, there is at least one problematic page). Therefore, everything is in order for a namespace translation to Ido. Even though this community is made mainly of 2 or 3 people, your support to this change has to be explicit here, so that developers can confirm it's a community decision and not a one-person's before proceeding with the change.
Please place your approvals (or non-approvals :) ) below this message as well as your comments if any. Thanks, Malafaya 14:39, 25 di novembro 2007 (UTC)

We already discussed about this formulation. This version is fine to me. If the word “Namespace” must be translated, it is in Ido “Nomaro” in which “nomo = name” and suffix -ar- means “group” (or so). – Admin Artomo 17:52, 25 di novembro 2007 (UTC)

I disagree. Landais 16:42, 28 di novembro 2007 (UTC)

The word “Namespace” must be translated in Ido by “Nomo-spaco” and the list of "Namesspaces/Nomospaci" must be :
	NS_MEDIA            => 'NS_MEDIA',
	NS_SPECIAL          => 'NS_SPECALA',
	NS_MAIN             => '',
	NS_TALK             => 'NS_DISKUTO',
	NS_USER             => 'NS_UZANTO',
	NS_USER_TALK        => 'NS_UZANTO_DISKUTO',
	NS_PROJECT          => 'NS_PROJETO'
	NS_PROJECT_TALK     => 'NS_PROJETO_DISKUTO',
	NS_IMAGE            => 'NS_IMAJO',
	NS_IMAGE_TALK       => 'NS_IMAJO_DISKUTO',
	NS_MEDIAWIKI        => 'NS_MEDIAWIKI',
	NS_MEDIAWIKI_TALK   => 'NS_MEDIAWIKI_DISKUTO',
	NS_TEMPLATE         => 'NS_MODELO',
	NS_TEMPLATE_TALK    => 'NS_MODELO_DISKUTO',
	NS_HELP             => 'NS_HELPO',
	NS_HELP_TALK        => 'NS_HELPO_DISKUTO',
	NS_CATEGORY         => 'NS_KATEGORIO',
	NS_CATEGORY_TALK    => 'NS_KATEGORIO_DISKUTO'
The above comment was posted by User:Landais
Landais, do you know what is being discussed here? You translated the variables names! This is not what is intended. This list is a translation of the namespaces names (like Wiktionary, Template_talk, etc.) as in the MessagesXX.php files, not the variables names (which cannot be translated). As for the translation of the word namespace, it's not required here for namespaces names. Malafaya 17:19, 28 di novembro 2007 (UTC)

Sorry! Yes translate the namespaces names is more clear for me! Now it would be better to translate "Template" by "Modelo" en Ido than by "Shablono".

Kontraste “modelo” esas chanjebla segun bezono dil uzanto. Exemple en la frontispico esas “modelo dil pagino”, quan on povas uzar en tala formo o adaptar segun bezono. – Artomo 07:39, 29 di novembro 2007 (UTC)
So, Landais, you agree with the others names but just not with the name for 'Template'. Actually, I'm with Artomo: 'Shablono' corresponds more exactly to the English word 'Template', and 'Modelo' is more like 'Model'. Maybe you are slightly biased towards Romance languages, as there is no exact word for 'Template' and it's common to use the word for 'Model' (i.e., 'Modèle' in French) in Wikis instead. It would be nice to have Fafnir's opinion as well... By the way, nice work at Betawiki, Landais :). Malafaya 10:34, 29 di novembro 2007 (UTC)
I don't know if you guys already noticed but the namespaces names were updated today. Apparently, it has nothing to do with my request but simply with the update of localized messages from Betawiki. Some new translated text also appeared today (some of Landais's work at Betawiki). Only the project name change to Wikivortaro is missing. The namespaces were also changed at Wikipedio as a result of this update, but the project name was kept too as Wikipedia. So, as nobody opposes the name Wikivortaro for this Wiktionary, I guess that's it. --Malafaya 22:53, 29 di novembro 2007 (UTC)
Dear fellow Wiktionarians, the project name is now Wikivortaro. Cheers, Malafaya 22:01, 1 di decembro 2007 (UTC)

Exemption doctrine policy[redaktar]

Hello. As you might know, the Wikimedia Foundation approved a resolution concerning non-free images more than a year ago. The resolution says that unless Wikimedia projects create an exemption doctrine policy (EDP) for non-free images, all of those images shall be deleted by March 23, 2008 (which was yesterday). We'd now like to gather information from the projects about their exemption policies in one place so we can check their validity, and if images on those projects are in accordance with the Foundation's resolution. Your project is one of these we don't have information about, so it'd be great if you could add it to the page listing all EDPs, meta:Non-free_content. If you have any questions about the page or don't have an EDP yet and want one, you can use the appropriate talkpage on Meta or just contact me directly on Meta or by e-mail (however, please note that I'm just a volunteer and therefore not in a position to give any official advice). Thanks for your cooperation! Timichal 18:37, 24 di marto 2008 (UTC)

Dear friend, We have not any images in this Wiktionary in Ido, so we have nothing to be deleted (free or non-free). Untill now we have not had any need of exemption policy. Do we now or can we go on just like before? - Artomo 07:20, 25 di marto 2008 (UTC)
You don't need a policy in that case - but it might be useful and effective for your project to disable local uploads entirely and use files from Wikimedia Commons only. You wouldn't have to deal with file licensing problems in the future, and I personally think it's the best way for Wiktionaries (en.wiktionary has their uploads already disabled). If you think this would be a good idea, you could start a quick vote in your community - if they agree, I'll help you with the rest of the process.
And by the way, you have two images here - Imajo:Un(1).PNG and Imajo:RokoPaperoCizo.jpg - but they aren't used anywhere and they don't have any license or source, so I think they can be safely deleted :) Good luck, Timichal 08:33, 25 di marto 2008 (UTC)
I support disabling local uploads. MalafayaBot 16:55, 2 di mayo 2008 (UTC)

Bot flag request

Bot is written to use the Mediawiki API, which is much more effective than the wikipedia pybot framework; it does use the framework module for language links, to stay up with changes in wikt policies (that are included there, some are not!).

It's primary function is to keep all the en.wikt links up to date, here it will be adding reciprocal links to the en.wikt when a link is added there; it is generally a good idea to keep these symmetrical. This is part of a project to develop interwiki code specifically for the wiktionaries. It also adds any other valid links it has found and removes any known to be invalid.

There are two functions: one builds an index of all of the wikts (without reading any pages, it uses the MW API to read the indexes), and then checks every en.wikt entry to correct the iwikis (again, without reading any pages except the ones being changed). While doing this, if it adds a link to another wikt, it will add the corresponding link there (here). The other function follows "recent changes" on all of the wikts, and adds needed links to the en.wikt, and likewise the corresponding link. While en.wikt policy is to link to redirects, in no case does Interwicket add links from another wikt to a redirect in the en.wikt.

It has done a number of tests here, in a test mode where it makes edits only once every few hours (on average). Robert Ullmann 09:09, 31 di januaro 2009 (UTC)

I have posted the following request on the Wikivortaro:Bots page. Carsrac 12:19, 2 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

Bot policy[redaktar]

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. In particular, this policy allows stewards to automatically flag known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests. The policy also enables global bots on this wiki (if this page says that is acceptable), which are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots.

This policy makes bot access requesting much easier for local users, operators, and stewards. To implement it we only need to create a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and add a line at the top noting that it is used here. Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; I hope to implement in two weeks if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests. Administration help[redaktar]

Hi there. Do you guys need any help with administration tasks or with the administration of the site in general? Let me know if you do or don't. Cheers, Razorflame 17:27, 7 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

Of course any help will be accepted. I’m the only sysop for the moment. I like to make this dictionary bigger (which takes a lot of my time) but I don’t know about the technical things and the possibilities which the Wiki-system might offer. On the other hand I don’t want to have here all kinds of tricks and overwhelming illustration. In my opinion, a dictionary must be as simple as possible, just showing the linguistical knowledge. Artomo 18:39, 7 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Hmm...looking at how pages are formatted, it would make it hard for other editors to make new entries for Ido here. For the ones that I made, I had to copy another entry'stuff and format it for the new entry, which can be a pain in the butt. Maybe there can be some way to template it? Also, the category system could be a bit better. For example, I was thinking that instead of Category:Eo KA, it could be Category:eo:KA or something like that, but this would take a hell of a lot of work to fix all the categories that way, and it might take too long to do so. What do you think of said ideas? Razorflame 19:08, 7 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
You can use “Kategorio” instead of “Category”. In the beginning the English word was the only version but now both are functioning, but of course the Ido version “Kategorio” is now better. About “Kategorio:eo:KA” I don’t know how it would be better as “Kategorio:Eo KA”. In other words, does the colon ( : ) make some benefit? You are right, changes of that type would be enormous with this amount of pages.
I think that one must find the path to the desired entry or word beginning from the Frontpage. Of course one must know some Ido (for exemple “Angliana” = “English”). There are list of languages and alfabetic lists which lead you forward. One can use the little boxes, too, to find something. Do you know Ido or do you consider this site technically only?
In the Frontpage there is section “Helpo”. Among others Modelo dil pagino gives you (almost) empty formulation for new pages for Ido or national languages. You can copy there all you need to your computer. I myself have in the screen side by side the site window and text page with basic formulation in order to copy there all I need to make new entries in the Ido dictionary. It’s very easy in that way. - Artomo 07:24, 8 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
I understand Ido at a basic level. I am io-1, so I understand a bit of Ido. I also understand a bit of Esperanto as well. Thanks for the help in general. Cheers, Razorflame 19:21, 11 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

I’m not mean but honest. You still need some improvement in your skills in Ido. You can go on making a lot for this Wiki as a normal user. We can return to this subject later. You should introduce yourself as a new Idist in other forums of Ido, for exemple in idolisto or in linguoido and then you’ll have firmer background in acting here as an administrator. One of the problems with this will be the Ido entries. Currently, the categories are listed right next to one of the parts at the top of the entry, when the natural place for them to be is at the bottom, right before the Interwikis. Would you mind if I moved them from where they are now to the bottom? Nothing about the entry will change but the location of where they are in the entry (in edit mode). Please let me know, Razorflame 01:15, 21 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

I've made some test edits for you to review and see if they are what you are wanting. Cheers, Razorflame 01:19, 21 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

It is better to have the information about the category right after the entry. In that way one doesn’t need to open the whole page to be edited. For example, sometimes Portugues and Ido word are similar. In order to add Portugues word you open the P-section only adding the category there. When the category is after the entry it is easier to find it if there must be made some changes in that particular place. Besides the location of change is more accurate in the list about recent changes when you open a section, not the whole page. This is advantage when you are checking the recent changes to find for exemple acts of vandals. So, please, do not change the location of category-infos. Artomo 08:37, 21 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Ok. I have found a way that I can change from category to kategorio without changing the location of the categories. Is that all right with you, then? Razorflame 20:30, 23 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
It’s OK if you are that kind of wizard : ) Artomo 10:41, 25 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Would you be alright if I had my bot do it for me? The bot would make the same changes and wouldn't change where the category would be on the page. All I need is for your permission to grant Darkicebot (my bot) the bot flag here so that he can use AWB without me needing to watch it. Of course, I'll run it for a few test edits first to make sure that the edits that it would make would be correct. If that is all right with you, I'll ask for a temporary bot flag on Meta. Is it alright with you? Cheers, Razorflame 17:21, 25 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Suporto – I put this tag for you. And it is good idea to run first some tests. Artomo 19:31, 25 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Me iranta la testo now. La roboto flago has been requested at Meta. Cheers, Razorflame 20:21, 25 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Are the test edits to your satisfaction? Razorflame 20:28, 25 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
As far as I understand all seems to be fine. I suppose there are thousands of objects, so it is a long-lasting task. Artomo 12:18, 26 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it will be a long-lasting task. I estimate there to be over 50,000 objects that need changing, so it will definitely be long lasting. I thank you for your vote of confidence in this matter and I hope that you won't be disappointed with my bots' performance! Cheers, Razorflame 19:42, 26 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
The bot flag was granted, and Darkicebot is currently running through every entry in the Ido Wiktionary, changing category to kategorio. There are approximately 173,000 more entries left for it to run through, and it has already run through about 13,000 entries so far. 7,934 edits have already been made, and I am expecting it to make another 50-75,000 edits before it is finished, if not more. Just thought that I would let you know the status of the project. Cheers, Razorflame 05:51, 27 di decembro 2009 (UTC)
Out of the original 185,784 entries that needed changing, approximately 51,000 entries have been processed. A total of around 23-27,000 edits have been made in total and there are 135,619 more pages left for it to go through. Hope this it what you wanted :) I expect this project to be done within the week, if not a bit longer. Cheers, Razorflame 19:33, 28 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

(unindenting) Saluto Artomo :) Mi roboto has processed more than 60,000 pages now. He has about 119,800 left to process. I'm giving him a break because he's been running for two and a half days straight now. I hope to have him finish the job by the end of this week. He has made around 30,000 edits so far. Razorflame 15:55, 29 di decembro 2009 (UTC)

Saluto Artomo! Darkicebot has gone through more than 60% of the entries here on the Ido Wiktionary, and has made around 46,000 edits. He still has about another 81,000 pages left to go through, but I am constantly working on getting that number down. Anyways, cheers, Razorflame 19:16, 6 di januaro 2010 (UTC)

He finished his task on March 7th, 2010, and has been deflagged per a request at Meta. Razorflame 23:09, 30 di junio 2010 (UTC)

Hey Artomo. Would you mind translating the Wiktionary logo vote notice into Ido? Thanks! Cbrown1023 23:19, 10 di januaro 2010 (UTC)

2010 Fundraising Is Almost Here[redaktar]

Hello Wikipedians, my name is Kelly and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser. My job is to be the liaison between the Ido community and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort; we recognize that banner messages which may perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to international audiences.

I'm contacting you as I am currently looking for translators who are willing to contribute to this project by helping translate and localize messages into Ido and suggesting messages that would appeal to Ido readers on the Fundraising Meta Page. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together.
Use the talk pages on meta, talk to your local communities, talk to others, talk to us, and add your feedback to the proposed messages as well! I look forward to working with you during this year's fundraiser. If someone could translate this message I would really appreciate it so that everyone is able to understand our goals and contribute to this year's campaign. Thanks!Klyman 17:55, 20 di oktobro 2010 (UTC)

Call for image filter referendum[redaktar]

The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own account.

Further details and educational materials will be available shortly. The referendum is scheduled for 12-27 August, 2011, and will be conducted on servers hosted by a neutral third party. Referendum details, officials, voting requirements, and supporting materials will be posted at Meta:Image filter referendum shortly.

I apologize that you are receiving this message in English. Please help translate it.

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is discussing changes to its Terms of Use. The discussion can be found at Talk:Terms of use. Everyone is invited to join in. Because the new version of Terms of use is not in final form, we are not able to present official translations of it. Volunteers are welcome to translate it, as German volunteers have done at m:Terms of use/de, but we ask that you note at the top that the translation is unofficial and may become outdated as the English version is changed. Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta[redaktar]

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Note that this cluster does have SUL but it is not integrated with SUL in production, so you'll need to create another account. You should avoid using the same password as you use here. — Global message delivery 00:14, 15 di januaro 2012 (UTC)

MediaWiki 1.19[redaktar]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.) The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to upgrade MediaWiki (the software powering this wiki) to its latest version this month. You can help to test it before it is enabled, to avoid disruption and breakage. More information is available in the full announcement. Thank you for your understanding.

Update on IPv6[redaktar]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the full version of this announcement on Meta)

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Read the full version of this announcement on how to test the behavior of IPv6 with various tools and how to leave bug reports, and to find a fuller analysis of the implications of the IPv6 migration.

2011 Picture of the Year competition[redaktar]

македонскиnorskpolski

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2011 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We are interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year 2011. Any user registered at Commons or a Wikimedia wiki SUL-related to Commons with more than 75 edits before 1 April 2012 (UTC) is welcome to vote and, of course everyone is welcome to view!

Detailed information about the contest can be found at the introductory page.

About 600 of the best of Wikimedia Common's photos, animations, movies and graphics were chosen –by the international Wikimedia Commons community– out of 12 million files during 2011 and are now called Featured Pictures.

From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons Features Pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories.

We regret that you receive this message in English; we intended to use banners to notify you in your native language but there was both, human and technical resistance.

See you on Commons! --Picture of the Year 2011 Committee 18:22, 5 di junio 2012 (UTC)

Mobile view as default view coming soon[redaktar]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the instructions on Meta)

The mobile view of this project and others will soon become the default view on mobile devices (except tablets). Some language versions of these projects currently show no content on the mobile home page, and it is a good time to do a little formatting so users get a mobile-friendly view, or to add to existing mobile content if some already exists.

If you are an administrator, please consider helping with this change. There are instructions which are being translated. The proposed date of switching the default view is June 21.

To contact the mobile team, email mobile-feedback-llists.wikimedia.org.

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year[redaktar]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it)

Hi,

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Request for Comment: Legal Fees Assistance Program[redaktar]

I apologize for addressing you in English. I would be grateful if you could translate this message into your language.

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a request for comment on a proposed program that could provide legal assistance to users in specific support roles who are named in a legal complaint as a defendant because of those roles. We wanted to be sure that your community was aware of this discussion and would have a chance to participate in that discussion.

If this page is not the best place to publicize this request for comment, please help spread the word to those who may be interested in participating. (If you'd like to help translating the "request for comment", program policy or other pages into your language and don't know how the translation system works, please come by my user talk page at m:User talk:Mdennis (WMF). I'll be happy to assist or to connect you with a volunteer who can assist.)

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out[redaktar]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.)

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

For further discussions please use this talk page (if you are uncomfortable writing in English you can also write in your native language there) or point me to the place where your discussion is happening so I can answer there.

Upcoming software changes - please report any problems[redaktar]

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it)

All Wikimedia wikis - including this one - will soon be upgraded with new and possibly disruptive code. This process starts today and finishes on October 24 (see the upgrade schedule & code details).

Please watch for problems with:

  • revision diffs
  • templates
  • CSS and JavaScript pages (like user scripts)
  • bots
  • PDF export
  • images, video, and sound, especially scaling sizes
  • the CologneBlue skin

If you notice any problems, please report problems at our defect tracker site. You can test for possible problems at test2.wikipedia.org and mediawiki.org, which have already been updated.

Thanks! With your help we can find problems fast and get them fixed faster.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed[redaktar]

Please translate for your local community

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Please sing up and help us with our 'User Experience' project! :) If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!

Thanks!

Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer![redaktar]

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

I am (still) searching for volunteers to spend some time on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. **All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be very low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)**

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[redaktar]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition.

Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful[redaktar]

(Please consider translating this message for the benefit of your fellow Wikimedians)

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. Proposal of a pronunciation recording tool[redaktar]

Hello, Rahul21, a developer, offers to develop a pronunciation recording tool for Wiktionary, helped by Michael Dale as part of GSoC. The tool would allow to record and add audio pronunciations to Wiktionary entries while browsing them (see background discussion on Wiktionary-l). Please read and comment the proposal! Hello!

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

Thanks, Billinghurst (thanks to all the translators!) 04:49, 24 di aprilo 2013 (UTC)

[en] Change to wiki account system and account renaming[redaktar]

[en] Change to section edit links[redaktar]

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Detailed information and a timeline is available on meta.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

Hi, apologies for posting this in English, but I wanted to alert your community to a discussion on Meta about potential changes to the Wikimedia Trademark Policy. Please translate this statement if you can. We hope that you will all participate in the discussion; we also welcome translations of the legal team’s statement into as many languages as possible and encourage you to voice your thoughts there. Please see the Trademark practices discussion (on Meta-Wiki) for more information. Thank you! --Mdennis (WMF) (talk)

Pywikipedia is migrating to git[redaktar]

Hello, Sorry for English but It's very important for bot operators so I hope someone translates this. Pywikipedia is migrating to Git so after July 26, SVN checkouts won't be updated If you're using Pywikipedia you have to switch to git, otherwise you will use out-dated framework and your bot might not work properly. There is a manual for doing that and a blog post explaining about this change in non-technical language. If you have question feel free to ask in mw:Manual talk:Pywikipediabot/Gerrit, mailing list, or in the IRC channel. Best Amir (via Global message delivery). 13:21, 23 di julio 2013 (UTC)

HTTPS for users with an account[redaktar]

Greetings. Starting on August 21 (tomorrow), all users with an account will be using HTTPS to access Wikimedia sites. HTTPS brings better security and improves your privacy. More information is available at m:HTTPS.

If HTTPS causes problems for you, tell us on bugzilla, on IRC (in the #wikimedia-operations channel) or on meta. If you can't use the other methods, you can also send an e-mail to https@wikimedia.org.

Notifications inform you of new activity that affects you -- and let you take quick action.

(This message is in English, please translate as needed)

Greetings!

Notifications will inform users about new activity that affects them on this wiki in a unified way: for example, this new tool will let you know when you have new talk page messages, edit reverts, mentions or links -- and is designed to augment (rather than replace) the watchlist. The Wikimedia Foundation's editor engagement team developed this tool (code-named 'Echo') earlier this year, to help users contribute more productively to MediaWiki projects.

We're now getting ready to bring Notifications to almost all other Wikimedia sites, and are aiming for a 22 October deployment, as outlined in this release plan. It is important that notifications is translated for all of the languages we serve.

There are three major points of translation needed to be either done or checked:

Please let us know if you have any questions, suggestions or comments about this new tool. For more information, visit this project hub and this help page. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:43, 4 di oktobro 2013 (UTC)

Introducting Beta Features[redaktar]

(Apologies for writing in English. Please translate if necessary)

We would like to let you know about Beta Features, a new program from the Wikimedia Foundation that lets you try out new features before they are released for everyone.

Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but in a way that's not disruptive.

Beta Features is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org. It will also be released on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki this Thursday, 7 November. Based on test results, the plan is to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013.

Here are the first features you can test this week:

Would you like to try out Beta Features now? After you log in on MediaWiki.org, a small 'Beta' link will appear next to your 'Preferences'. Click on it to see features you can test, check the ones you want, then click 'Save'. Learn more on the Beta Features page.

After you've tested Beta Features, please let the developers know what you think on this discussion page -- or report any bugs here on Bugzilla. You're also welcome to join this IRC office hours chat on Friday, 8 November at 18:30 UTC.

Beta Features was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's Design, Multimedia and VisualEditor teams. Along with other developers, they will be adding new features to this experimental program every few weeks. They are very grateful to all the community members who helped create this project — and look forward to many more productive collaborations in the future.

Enjoy, and don't forget to let developers know what you think! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 5 di novembro 2013 (UTC)

Call for comments on draft trademark policy[redaktar]

Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?[redaktar]

I apologize for this message being only in English. Please translate it if needed to help your community.

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

Please join this RfC -- and share your advice.

All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository.

You are also welcome to join tomorrow's Office hours chat on IRC, this Thursday, January 16, at 19:00 UTC, if you would like to discuss this project with our team and other community members.

We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together on this important topic. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 06:47, 16 di januaro 2014 (UTC)
